Five resources, with a different job for each

Start with the writing task you want to teach. A child who needs to rehearse an idea aloud needs different support from a child who can write a sentence but needs a story starting point. The five-resource bundle gives you choices for those tasks.

The comparison and sample week below explain all five included products. The week is a suggested first-grade arrangement. Check each product’s grade range and select tasks that fit the learners you teach.

Sentence Building Writing Center for Kindergarten & 1st Grade

Put a small selection of WHO, WHAT, and WHERE cards beside the sentence mat. Model one sensible combination, read unfamiliar wording together, and ask the child to say the complete idea. Keep the cards visible while the child records it on a writing template.

CVC Sentence Building Worksheets

The L1 product preview shows the word cards A, dog, can, and hop. A possible completed sentence is “A dog can hop.” Preview unfamiliar words, let the child arrange all four cards, and ask them to read the sentence before gluing. Then follow the page instruction to write it twice.

Choose a page whose words have been taught. The provided word cards keep the word-order task visible while the child works.

Grade 1 I Can Write! Worksheets

The Pets Read & Copy page includes “I have a dog.” and “I see a cat.” Read a model, discuss its meaning, and have the student copy it while checking the capital, spaces, and period. Stay with the same topic and choose a later step when the learner is ready for less support.

Sentence Building Morning Work & Writing Prompts for 1st & 2nd Grade

The October past-tense page models “Yesterday, I picked out a pumpkin at the market.” Read the choices together, then let the child choose a time, person, action, and place, trace the model, write a sentence, and illustrate it. Offer the blank partner page when the student can supply those sentence parts with less help.

Monthly Roll & Write Sentence & Story Writing Centers for 1st & 2nd Grade

The Autumn Roll & Write sentence table includes “A red,” “apple,” and “fell from a tree.” Selecting those entries gives “A red apple fell from a tree.” Model where to roll and find each choice, then read the complete idea before writing.

Check that the result makes sense. Use a sentence task for a short session, or a story-planning page when the learner is ready to connect events.

A sample first-grade week using all five

Use this as a planning example after introducing the relevant page routines. Keep one shared habit across the week: say the idea, read what is written, and check a complete sentence. The materials offer different prompts, so you can carry the writing habit into a new topic.

One possible five-day writing plan
WhenResource and activityWhat to notice
Monday · rehearse an ideaWriting Center: model one WHO–WHAT–WHERE choice, then let pairs build and say a sensible sentence. Can the child say a complete idea and read it back with support?
Tuesday · practice word orderCVC Sentence Building: use a suitable L1 or L2 page with a group that has learned its words; arrange, read, and write twice.Does the word order make sense when read aloud?
Wednesday · record with supportGrade 1 I Can Write!: choose the Pets topic and a suitable step, beginning with Read & Copy if a model is needed. Can the child attend to capitals, word spaces, and the ending?
Thursday · repeat a familiar routineSentence Building Morning Work: choose a taught tense and monthly theme; provide guided choices or the blank partner page. Can the student select or supply sentence parts and check the result?
Friday · start a new sentence or storyRoll & Write: model an Autumn sentence choice; use a story-planning page for students ready to extend the task. Can the writer turn the prompt into an idea that makes sense?

Change the support without changing every instruction

Use different tasks in different groups: rehearse with Writing Center cards when oral-language support is needed, or preview a suitable CVC page for short-vowel practice. Within I Can Write, select the step that fits the student. Within Morning Work, offer guided choices or the blank version. With Roll & Write, choose a sentence or story task.

Keep one shared check across the groups: read the result back and ask whether the idea is complete.

Prepare only what the next session needs

Check the paper size and printing instructions for each selected resource, then prepare the next session’s materials. For the sample week, keep these items ready:

  • Writing Center: a small card selection, sentence mat, and recording template.
  • CVC: the selected L1 or L2 page, scissors, and glue.
  • I Can Write: a suitable Pets worksheet and writing tools.
  • Morning Work: one monthly page with guided choices or its blank partner.
  • Roll & Write: a sentence or story-planning sheet and a die.
